Elections Commission (EC) President Ahmed Shareef, who has been subject to multiple allegations by the ruling party over September’s presidential election, headed out of the country on Wednesday.
He announced this via twitter in the morning, writing ‘out of the country for a short break’.
RaajjeMV understands that the EC President left to neighboring Sri Lanka for medical purposes.
While the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) continues to accuse Shareef and the Commission of electoral fraud, the party has been holding nightly protests in capital Malé City since October 1.
Three members of the Commission had gone to Sri Lanka earlier this month, following a number of death threats. They have since returned to Maldives.
President Abdulla Yameen, who lost hopes for reelection in September, had even filed a petition at the Supreme Court, seeking to annul the election. However, the top court ruled that there was no legal basis to annul the election.
