Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom returned to Maafushi island on Saturday ‘in appreciation of the kindness shown by the people’.
He made the trip with wife, former First Lady Nasreena Ibrahim and daughters Dunya and Yumna, as well as son-in-law Mohamed Nadheem.
The former president, who was recently freed after the High Court overturned his nearly two-year jail sentence, said via twitter that the purpose of the ‘special trip’ was to show appreciation to the people for their ‘kindness’ towards his family members ‘during their numerous trips’ to visit him, Nadheem and son Ahmed Faris while they were in jail.

High Court on Thursday overturned the former long-standing leader’s jail sentence, ruling that the lower court ‘had not followed procedures in its verdicts’. While he was sentenced in June, Gayoom was released on bail on September 30.
Arrested on February 5 immediately after the declaration of a state of emergency, Gayoom was found guilty of obstruction of justice four months later.
His son, Faris was granted bail the same day.
