First Lady Fathimath Ibrahim has returned to the Maldives from Saudi Arabia, where she has resided since late September.

The first lady was greeted at the Velana International Airport by President Abdulla Yameen, a few loyal cabinet ministers, and supporters of the ruling party.

The first family has not revealed a reason for Fathimath, commonly referred to as ‘Madam’, to have visited Saudi Arabia, with which relations have been bolstered during her husband’s tenure in office.

President Yameen lost his bid for re-election and is to be replaced by President-elect Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, who will take his oath of office on November 17th.

President Yameen has alleged that the votes were rigged and has asked the Supreme Court to annul the results of September’s polls. The apex court is yet to reach a verdict in the case.
