Judge Nihan cannot be released under bail: High Court
His release is not possible as he has been convicted for terrorism
Four separate charges were raised against Nihan
Nihan was sentenced to 17 years in 2016,

The High Court of the Maldives has informed Judge of Maamigili Magistrate Court, Ahmed Nihan’s legal team that he cannot be released from incarceration, under bail.

Judge Nihan was sentenced by the Criminal Court to 17 years for procuring a court order to arrest President Abdulla Yameen, on the 16th of June 2016. He was sentenced under article six of the new terrorism law.

RaajjeMV understands that the High Court had informed Nihan’s legal team that he cannot be granted bail as he is doing time after having been convicted on terrorism charges.

High Court had on Wednesday morning held the hearing following Nihan’s appeal to nullify his prison sentence. State had answered to the appeal at Wednesday’s hearing. Lawyers had also been told that another hearing in the case has been scheduled for coming Monday.

Four separate charges were raised on Judge Nihan for the court order procured to arrest President Yameen. As such, he was accused of creating false documents, for illicit actions that go against his responsibilities as magistrate, for abusing his power as magistrate as well as being involved in acts that endorse terrorism.
