Elections Commission (EC) has filed a complaint at the police service over false allegations being made against its members.

Some members of ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) have been gathering outside the party’s office to protest against the EC after President Abdulla Yameen’s refusal to accept the results even after conceding defeat at the presidential election.

Protesters include President’s Office spokesperson Ibrahim Muaz Ali who have been accusing the EC of rigging the election and calling the members thieves. These protests are being aired live by some TV channels.

After filing the police complaint, EC chief Ahmed Shareef denied Muaz’s accusations and said that they will also file a complaint at the broadcasting commission against TV channels broadcasting the slanderous statements after gathering the relevant videos.

All the EC members accept Shareef have left to neighboring Sri Lanka after death threats were made against them after they announced the final result of the election. A police complaint has been filed over the threats as well.
