The Human Right Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) on Monday revealed that there have been no result-changing issues with the Presidential Election held on the 23rd of September.
The commission publicized a Presidential Elections 2018 observation report on Monday, while the ruling Progressive Party of the Maldives (PPM) and outgoing President Abdulla Yameen continue to protest the election result.
The 160-page report states that all of the procedures on election day ran smoothly and peacefully. The commission also revealed that they had not found any result-changing issues upon its observation of the election.
The report also highlighted the tireless work carried out by commission members, employees, volunteers as well as the private parties that observed the election, the media and political parties included.
HRCM had further appealed not to bring amendments to the electoral regulations, urging all to follow the due procedures when campaigning in future elections, also asking all parties to respect each other’s campaign rights.
The September 23 election has been deemed free, fair and transparent by local and international observers as well. Although President Yameen accepted defeat the day following the announcement of temporary results, he had later called on all citizens to take to the streets, claiming that the Elections Commission had “stolen” the citizens votes. Since then, the ruling party supporters have been taking to the streets, serial protests, calling for answers for their “lost votes”.
