President Yameen is ‘caught in his own trap’: MP Shahid

The lawmaker claimed that the president had unsuccessfully attempted to rig Maldives’ presidential elections

Shahid said that it is a responsibility of everyone to respect and uphold the 'decision made by the people'

Incumbent President Abdulla Yameen is ‘caught in a trap’ of his own design and will soon succumb to it, says Heinveiru-north constituency MP Abdulla Shahid.

Speaking at a talk-show on Raajje Television on Wednesday night, MP Shahid said it is ‘shameful’ for President Yameen to claim that September’s ballots were rigged, despite conceding victory to his rival.

Shahid said that it is a responsibility of everyone to respect and uphold the decision made by the people through the ballot box.

The lawmaker claimed that the president had unsuccessfully attempted to rig Maldives’ presidential elections, held on 23rd September, but his plans had back fired.

“Yameen attempting to alter the results of the elections is proof that his plan to attain victory had back fired. An unprecedented amount of people said no to him”, Shahid said.

Shahid further said that the results of the ballots, which show president elect Ibrahim Mohamed Solih securing a victory with over 30,000 votes ahead of Yameen, cannot be reversed.
