Ruling PPM protested on Monday night, accusing the Elections Commission of 'electoral fraud'

Following the ruling party’s accusations against him and the Elections Commission, Commissioner Ahmed Shareef has said that he ‘will always stand on the path of justice’.

While Joint Opposition’s candidate Ibrahim Mohamed Solih won last week’s presidential election against incumbent President Abdulla Yameen, the ruling party took to the streets on Monday night, accusing the Commission of electoral fraud. While the president took part in the protest, he also called on the people to take to the streets until they get their answers.

He also spoke of a leaked audio clip, allegedly of Elections Commissioner Ahmed Shareef and another individual, calling on Shareef to answer to the allegations.

In the leaked audio clip, Shareef is heard saying that at the moment, President Yameen wants to “get it done” no matter what is put at stake, and the person on the other end of the line is heard telling him to “not follow through orders” no matter what he is told to do. While this was leaked earlier on Monday, Shareef has since said that it is forged with mixes of different conversations.

In a tweet sent out in Dhivehi, Shareef noted that he had addressed all the allegations directed at him ‘before the election and after’, adding that he will always stand on the path of justice.

“In a democracy, an election is the people’s voice. This voice is very clear. It is everyone’s responsibility to listen to the people’s voice”, added Shareef.

Shareef, a known close associate of the sitting president, was appointed to the post a few months ahead of the election, in March. Prior to that, he was seen active in Yameen’s rebid campaign.
