Discussions at the Maldivian Democratic Party’s (MDP) national assembly meeting on Tuesday night has led to the possibility of an official police case being filed over alleged destruction of state documents.

Ilyas Labeeb, president of the party’s Hulhudhoo branch, said that civil employees and the police must act if such an act is taking place.

“If such an act is taking place, we must go to the police. Civil servants who see such a thing going on should also take action”, Ilyas said.

The allegations surfaced after truck-loads of cargo was removed from Mulee’aage under the cover of tarps. Later that night, some items were burnt at a ruling party assembly site.

Although the President’s Office spokesperson took to his own Twitter account to claim that none of the items were ‘illegal’, people remain unconvinced as protesters gathered in front of the premises called for the arrest and prosecution of cabinet members and ruling party lawmakers.

With evidence implicating President Abdulla Yameen being involved in an ‘orgy of corruption’, as one report described it, his opponents say that it is highly likely that the administration is trying to hide or destroy paper trail that could lead back to any wrong doing.
