Maldives Red Crescent Malé branch has begun collecting donations for the 55 expatriate workers left in need, following Saturday morning's fire at the 'Thaisey Koshi' in the capital.

In a tweet sent out on Saturday afternoon, MRC said that it had provided first aid and psychological support to those affected in the fire, revealing that 55 men had lost most of their belongings in the fire.

"We are currently open to collecting donations of clothing items, bed linen, and toiletries for the 55 men who lost most of their belongings to the fire," reads the tweet.

Maldives Red Crescent said that they will be collecting donations from 3pm to 10pm, until Monday.

The fire occurred at the housing ministry's labour quarters early Saturday morning. While the fire greatly damaged the building, some of the workers were asleep at the time of the incident. They were immediately transferred to Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) said that its Fire and Rescue team received a report of the fire at around 3:06am on Saturday. The fire was quelled by 3:38am.

The building next to the labour quarters, police's tow yard had been affected in the fire as well.

Police is currently investigating the fire.
