Residents of Thinadhoo island in Gaafu Dhaalu atoll have discovered paraphernalia believed to be used for sorcery.

On Tuesday night, officers of the police drew tape and cordoned off the area where residents found an object wrapped in cotton bearing a photograph of incumbent President Abdulla Yameen.

The object, which is now in possession of the Maldives Police Service, was discovered shortly after President Yameen concluded a campaign trip to the island.

The Maldives Police Service has said that they are investigating the matter.

Sorcery and black magic is illegal in the country and in August 16 and 17, police arrested four men for allegedly practicing sorcery in support of President Yameen’s opponents, the Joint Opposition.
