The Police Service on Monday revealed that they have uncovered a plot create a public disturbance depending on the result of the presidential elections.

In a press conference on Monday, police spokesperson Ahmed Shifan said that some individuals are conspiring to make the international community believe the Presidential Election would not be free or fair.

Spokesperson Shifan said that the plot uncovered by the intelligence department to influence the election on September 23 and that it may lead to the incidents on 8 February 2012 repeating. He added that the police service will not allow such acts of terrorism.

February 8, 2012, supporters of the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) had poured onto the streets of capital city Male’ to protest then President Nasheed’s removal from office, following his resignation under duress. Thousands of opposition supporters had protested for days, and had undergone inhumane treatment from police officers, leading to some officers being driven out of some islands, and police stations being torched.

Shifan said that strict action will be taken against those involved in this plot as well as persons who encourage such acts of terrorism.

However, he did not reveal names of those suspected to be behind the plot or whether or any arrests had been made.

The press conference ended without giving journalists the chance to ask questions.
