Jailed former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb was brought to capital Malé on Wednesday, for medical purposes.
Lawyer Moosa Siraj said that his client’s condition ‘is serious’, adding that it was noticed by his wife during a conjugal visit.
Siraj noted that ‘this is the first time Adeeb has been treated in months’.
Adeeb, the youngest VP the country has seen, was arrested in October 2015 over the explosion aboard the presidential speedboat; which authorities claim was as an assassination attempt on President Abdulla Yameen.
He is currently serving prison sentences totaling 33 years over several convictions.
His family and legal team have expressed concern over his deteriorating medical condition after being stricken with glaucoma, internal cysts, and kidney stones. Despite repeated requests, the government has refused to allow him to go abroad for treatment.
