Joint Opposition Coalition’s Presidential candidate Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has decided to proceed with his campaign tour planned across Huvadhu atoll amid a time a heated dispute that flared between supporters of the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party and ruling Progressive Party of the Maldives (PPM) on Wednesday, left the island in ‘unsafe’ conditions to campaign in.

According to MDP, the three-day tour across Huvadhu atoll, which comprises of Gaaf Alif and Gaaf Dhaalu atolls, will begin on Friday morning and Solih and team are to visit 18 islands in total.

Their first trip will be to four islands of Gaaf Dhaalu atoll, the team revealed. Solih and team will visit nine islands in Gaaf Dhaalu atoll and nine islands in Gaaf Alif atoll in total.

While the ambiance in Kolamaafushi is heated following a dispute between supporters of MDP and PPM on Wednesday, Solih and team will be visiting the island on Saturday.

Solih and team decided to proceed with the campaign tour across Huvadhu atoll despite Maldives Police Service (MPS) spokesperson Ahmed Shifan having advised against it.

Special gatherings will be hosted in three islands during the opposition coalition’s campaign tour.

While one gathering will be held in Thinadhoo island on Friday night, another will be held in Gahdhoo island on Saturday and the final one will be held on Sunday night in Villigili island.

Solih and team will be returning back to capital city Male’ after concluding his Huvadhu atoll trip, on Monday. With this trip, the number of outlying atolls Solih has visited as part of his campaign for the approaching Presidential Election will reach 19 with the only remaining atoll to visit being Haa Alif.
