The government will be donating a total of USD 50,000 to India’s state of Kerala, which has been devasted by heavy monsoon floods since early August.

The President’s Office said on Sunday that the donation is a ‘token contribution in solidarity with the people of India’.

“The Government of Maldives conveys profound sympathies to the Government and the people of India, in particular to those directly affected by the tragedy, as well as commiserations to the members of the bereaved families” a statement from the President’s Office said.

Indian news outlets quote Kerala’s chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan, who says that no less than 725,000 displaced people are being given shelter at relief camps, which total 5,645 in number.

On Monday, they reported that more than 350 people have been killed in landslides caused by the floods. Military teams have rescued about 22,000.
