A speedboat docked at the Hanimaadhoo airport’s jetty has sunk.

According to the media official at Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF), the speedboat, “Kiruna” that sunk in Hanimaadhoo island of Haa Dhaalu atoll, was from Kulhudhuffushi island of the same atoll.

MNDF revealed the reason behind the boat sinking to be due to rough seas in the region that caused waves to crash over the boat. MNDF had however revealed that no one was onboard the vessel when the boat started plunging below the surface of the stormy waves.

The submerged speedboat was reported around 01:51pm and it was re-floated within less than an hour.

MNDF highlighted Hanimaadhoo airport staff’s assistance in re-floating the vessel.
