President Abdulla Yameen needs to show some humanity, says Dunya Maumoon, the first foreign minister of Yameen’s administration.
Dunya, who is President Yameen’s niece, said this in an interview on a Sri Lankan TV channel.
In the TV interview, Dunya said that Maldivians want an environment free from fear and that while President Yameen has contributed to the country, he is not capable of solving the current major issues.
As evidence of President Yameen’s failure to solve the political crisis, Dunya pointed to the imprisonment of numerous political leaders including her father, former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, the removal of 12 MPs, and the parliament being at a standstill.
She said that while President Yameen has improved the economy and the tourism sector, she expressed concern over the increasing national debt and questioned whether the country is capable of repaying it.
Dunya also criticized his foreign policy which has isolated Maldives from the neighboring countries and said that Maldives should have equal diplomatic relations with China and India.
Former President Maumoon, Dunya’s father and President Yameen’s half-brother, was arrested during a state of emergency in relation to the controversial February 1 Supreme Court ruling and has been given more than one year in prison for refusing to hand over his phone to the police. Dunya’s brother and MP Faris Maumoon has been in prison since leaving the ruling party with 12 other MPs and joining the opposition.
