Over 8,000 individuals have submitted forms to re-register for September's polls, says Elections Commissioner Ahmed Shareef.
He said this while speaking to the press with opposition presidential candidate Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on Thursday, after he submitted his candidacy documents with the Commission.
Noting that over 8,000 eligible voters have applied to re-register so far, Shareef appealed to the public to ensure that they have been re-registered.
Furthermore, he asked all to make sure that their phone numbers as well as that of witnesses are on the application forms, noting that 'there might be situations that the Commission has to contact them". He added that forms without numbers 'will be rejected'.
While the Commission opened the opportunity for voters to re-register on July 17, Shareef said the amount re-registered in the 10 days since is higher compared to the same period in previous elections.
While opposition parties are also conducting drives to help people re-register, Elections Commission said that this is something that they encourage.
Voters will be able to re-register until August 11.
While there have been reports that the Commission is working to place ballot boxes at government offices, Shareef said that they have already announced the locations where polling stations will be placed and that 'there have been no changes' to that.
