First Couple to hold function to mark Independence Day 2018

The official celebrations for Maldives' 53rd Independence Day is to begin on Thursday

The First Couple, President Abdulla Yameen and First Lady Fathmath Ibrahim, is hosting an official function on Wednesday night at Dharubaaruge on the occasion of this year's Independence Day.

The President's Office stated that many Maldivian citizens have been invited to the function, similar to previous years.

The official event to celebrate the 53rd Independence Day is to be held at the Republic Square on Thursday night.

At the event, the President will be conferring the national award to 24 top achievers in the nation.

Just like previous years, several activities have been planned for Independence Day, celebrated annually on the 26th of July.

The Maldives gained independence from the British on 26 July 1965, after 77 years as a British protectorate.
