The opposition coalition’s candidate Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has finished a successful door-to-door campaign in Hulhumale’ on Tuesday, despite being obstructed and almost attacked multiple times.
Solih was first targeted by two men after stepping off the ferry and walking near Central Park. They failed to do anything as Solih was taken behind a vehicle for protection during the scuffle.
After Solih continued his door-to-door campaign, the same attackers on motorcycles confronted him again. Solih was then taken to Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s office in Hulhumale’.
Afterwards, Solih came out again and said that the incidents have only strengthened their campaign. Solih and other senior opposition members continued visiting families in Hulhumale’ to hear their concerns. Many of the families expressed their displeasure of the current administration and asked Solih to save the nation from the current turmoil.
While leaving an apartment building in Hulhumale’, attackers threw packets filled with engine oil at the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) campaign team and the media covering the event. While senior MDP members and journalists were drenched with oil, Solih was once again safe as he was inside the building at the time of the incident.
Condemning the oil attack, MDP Vice President Mohamed Shifaz said that the incidents showed that President Abdulla Yameen has run out of options.
MDP Chairperson Hassan Latheef said that throwing oil will not stop them and that the campaign and attacks have only increased support for them.
Solih has returned to Male’ after successfully completing his door-to-door campaign in Hulhumale’.
