President Abdulla Yameen has said that he expects the European Union (EU) to take action against the Maldives this month, revealing that the government's attempts to resolve matters have failed.

The President said that despite such a threat, that his government will continue to uphold its policies and "leave it in God's hands".

Noting that government officials have been holding discussions with the EU over the matter, President Yameen said that the EU officials have been ignoring their argument and instead listening to the opposition.

"The European Union is saying that they will only accept the result of the [upcoming] election if all convicts are released. That they should be allowed to contest. I will not accept this. Even if we take a vote today, the Maldivian people will not accept such conditions," said the President.

He added that despite their continuous calls to release these prisoners "it does not mean they have not committed any crimes" and that his government will never listen to anything that is against the judicial system.
