Dhiggaru MP Faris Maumoon is to be summoned to a court hearing on Wednesday regarding the state’s terrorism charges against him.

He is to be summoned at 11am for a preliminary hearing for the terrorism charges.

The state has alleged that Faris is the leading figure behind a conspiracy to overthrow the government through the Supreme Court ruling on February 1, which ordered the release of nine high-profile political prisoners and the reinstatement of 12 opposition MPs.

Faris is to be kept in jail until the end of his terrorism trial, which will be overseen by Criminal Court’s chief judge Ahmed Hailam.

He is also charged with offering a bribe to a fellow parliamentarian, who later took back his claim and testified in court that Faris did not offer him a bribe. No hearing regarding the bribery charge has been held afterwards.

He has also recently been sentenced to four months and 24 days in prison after being found guilty of identity fraud for using the flag and logo of ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) at a press conference.
