Legal expert and former Member of Parliament for the Kendhoo constituency, Ali Hussain, has stated that while the People’s Majlis holds the constitutional authority to remove a President from office, the Supreme Court must also advise the President to ensure intergenerational justice in matters concerning the nation's future.
During a press conference held on Tuesday, Ali Hussain expressed deep concern regarding reports that a significant portion of Ras Male' is being permanently handed over to the company Eagle Hills. In light of this, he made a special appeal to three of the Maldives' most vital state institutions.
Highlighting the role of the People's Majlis as the primary authority, Ali Hussain stated that parliamentarians must recognize their legal and constitutional power to remove the President from office through impeachment. He further emphasized that the responsibility of holding the government accountable and ensuring oversight lies directly with the members of parliament.
Please tell President Muizzu to stop this, to put these actions on hold, and to seek a mandate through a public vote.Ali Hussain
Appearing as a third-party intervenor in the Supreme Court appeal, Ali Hussain argued that the court's mandate extends beyond ensuring justice for individual cases; it must also take into account the principles of intergenerational justice.
He stated that when faced with issues impacting the future of the nation's children and the country's independence, even the Supreme Court justices must advise President Muizzu against proceeding with such significant matters without first seeking the public's consent through a referendum.
Furthermore, Ali Hussain highlighted that the Maldives National Defence Force and the Maldives Police Service are sworn by oath before Allah to ensure the nation's peace and security, asserting that the Maldivian people are the true owners of the country's land. He called upon the security forces to inform President Muizzu that neither he nor any other party has the right to sell this land without the consent of the people.
