Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom’s trial hearings have been cancelled for a second time over his ill health.
The jailed opposition leader was unable to attend the scheduled court hearings on Tuesday and on Wednesday.
The police have been informed of Maumoon being unable to attend his hearings scheduled for Wednesday morning.
Maumoon is being charged with obstruction, bribery, and attempting to overthrow the government and has been remanded for the rest of his trial.
He was arrested on February 5, the night President Abdulla Yameen, Maumoon's half-brother, declared a state of emergency after refusing to abide by a Supreme Court ruling on February 1 that ordered the release of high-profile political prisoners and reinstatement of dismissed opposition MPs.
Supreme Court Chief Justice Abdulla Saeed and Justice Ali Hameed have been arrested and charged as well, and President Yameen has claimed that the Supreme Court order was an attempt to overthrow the government.
