'May Day protests were held in defiance to government oppression of laborers'
Ameeth highlighted several campaign pledges President Yameen made to work force demographics
Ameeth said that the current administration has failed workers in the Maldives

The 2015 ‘May Day’ protests were held in defiance to President Abdulla Yameen’s oppression of laborers and violation of workerrights, says Maduvvari constituency MP Mohamed Ameeth.

Ameeth highlighted several campaign pledges President Yameen made to work force demographics, such as allowances to farmers and fishermen and flats for married couples, as well as more job opportunities for the youth.

Ameeth said that the current administration has failed workers in the Maldives, who gathered strength in the representation they received during the May Day protests four years ago.

Further, having conveyed his greetings to journalists on scene to cover the rally on occasion of the World Press Freedom Day, Ameeth said that he shared his concerns about the condition of the local press, especially pertaining to the ‘draconian’ anti-defamation law, with President Yameen, to no avail.
