Maldives Meteorological Services (MET Office) has said that heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected in parts of the country.

While the office has issued a while alert from Shaviyani to Alifu atoll from 8:20am on Wednesday to 1pm, heavy showers are expected in the central and southern atolls later in the day.

Atolls in the southern atolls will experience heavy rain with surface winds gusting between seven to 15 miles per hour, from southwest to westerly, while gust of five to 13 miles per hour are expected elsewhere from west to westerly. MET Office said that winds may guts 35 miles per hour during showers.

However, it said that seas ‘are expected to be slight and moderate during showers’.

MET Office further noted that heavy showers are expected in neighboring India and Sri Lanka as well.
