The Indian external affairs ministry has again called on the Maldives to enforce the Supreme Court order and to ‘restore the normal functioning of democracy’.

Spokesperson to the Ministry of External Affairs of the Government of India, Raveesh Kumar, said this at a press conference on Thursday, adding that India believes this is the wish of the Maldivian people.

“It is our sincere desire that democracy in the Maldives is restored and the situation returns to normal, we believe that this is the desire of the Maldivian people as well” Raveesh Kumar further said.

India said in a statement on Wednesday, that its government is deeply dismayed by Maldives’ decision to extend the state of emergency by 30 days.

“The consequent delay in the resumption of the political process and the continuing suspension of the functioning of democratic institutions including the judiciary is likely to further delay restoration of normalcy in Maldives,” reads the statement.

This statement came after the Indian government had also said that it hopes that the Maldives will not extend the state of emergency.

While the ongoing political conflict in the Maldives has been a point of concern for India it has thus far only made statements over the matter.

Former President Mohamed Nasheed has meanwhile called on the Indian government to send an envoy into the Maldives, citing the lack of a legal means to have a unanimous Supreme Court ruling enforced.
