Democratic leaders have no choice but to abide by will of the people: MP Abdulla Ahmed

A democratic government has no choice but to abide by the will of the people and must seek their approval before large decisions, Thinadhoo constituency MP Abdulla Ahmed has said.

MP Ahmed said speaking at the opposition rally on Wednesday night that the Maldivian government has failed the people.

Instead of turning to the people for support, the government has been taken the ‘tyrannical route’, the parliamentarian said.

The parliamentarian described this means as politicizing the military and policing institutions and centralizing power by ‘effectively shutting down the judicial and legislative bodies’.

“We will be perseverant, we will remain stead fast in ensuring that President Abdulla Yameen is lawfully removed from office” MP Ahmed said.

Wednesday night’s rally was disbanded by officers of the police, and those gathered at it had taken to the streets to demonstrate.

Demonsrators had called for the resignation of President Abdulla Yameen, military chief Major General Ahmed Shiyam, and acting Police Commissioner Abdulla Nawaz.
