US President Donald Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has spoken about the situation in the Maldives.
The discussions were carried out in a phone call on Thursday evening.
A tweet issued by Atul Keshap, Ambassador of the US to the Maldives and Sri Lanka, said that the ‘two leaders expressed concern’ over the current situation in the Maldives and the ‘importance of respect for democratic institutions and rule of law’.

Both India and the US have stressed on the importance of dialogue in resolving the present crisis and for lifting the State of Emergency. The White House National Security Council also said they were keeping a close eye on the situation.
America stands with the people of Maldives. The Maldivian government and military must respect the rule of law, freedom of expression, and democratic institutions. The world is watching.

Keshap has been continuously calling out on the Government, ever since the political crisis began. However, the Government had refused to listen to the pleas.
Discussions also centered around Afghanistan, Burma and North Korea. Most of US policy in South East Asia and Indian Ocean region is based on Indian foreign policy.
