Supreme Court Chief Justice Abdulla Saeed and Justice Ali Hameed has been arrested.

They were arrested late on Monday night at the Supreme Court building.

Police have confirmed the arrest, and said it was regarding an investigation.

The arrest of the Maldives’ top two judges comes after the government declared a state of emergency, curtailing some powers of the Supreme Court and rights of judges and criminals.

Chief Justice Saeed and Justice Hameed were arrested after police officers and the military searched the Supreme Court building for some time.

They were taken to Dhoonidhoo Prison island’s detention centre.
