18-year-old Ahmed Zahil, who had been suffering from dermatological complications and an ailment of the digestive track, has passed away while receiving treatment in India.

Doctors pronounced him dead at around 02:30 am on Friday. Zahil’s family took him to India two months ago after the heavily malnutritioned young man gained enough weight to be eligible for surgery.

His family has since said that doctors told them that there is nothing that can be done for him two days prior to his death. He had reportedly weighed less than 20 kilograms when he died.

Zahil had been suffering from the aforementioned dermatological condition since birth, having developed digestive difficulties much later last year.

He had been admitted to the KIMS Hospital in India before doctors there said they could not provide him with any further treatment. After his family contacted multiple hospitals abroad, they decided to take him to a hospital in Bangkok.

State insurance Aasandha does not cover hospitals in the region, and Zahil’s family began a fund-raising drive to raise enough to cover airfare and treatment expenses.

The ‘Help Zahil’ drive garnered prominence and several donations came his way before Aasandha arranged to provide Zahil with USD 20,000 for treatment in Bangkok. While the family had asked for much more, the company said it believes said amount would suffice.
