Nasheed stated that granting long-term land leases is not a concern, noting that the Maldivian population itself is comprised of people who migrated from various regions. He further emphasized that he sees no issue with leasing land for a 100-year period to facilitate such development.

MDP Chairperson and former President Mohamed Nasheed has expressed his full support for the development of the Ras Male' project through the UAE-based company, Eagle Hills.
Speaking at the 38th meeting of the MDP National Council's fourth session on Sunday night, Nasheed expressed his full support for the project. Addressing concerns raised by some regarding the potential implications of granting 100-year land leases, Nasheed cited a historical example. He noted that 300 years ago, of the three vessels that arrived in Hoarafushi, one remained on the island while another proceeded to Dhuvaafaru.
Furthermore, he noted his awareness that the MDP President for the Hoarafushi constituency is a member of that family. He added that this connection led him to reflect on the potential implications of reaching the 100-year milestone.
I fully support this project—wholeheartedly. Some have raised concerns about what might happen after one hundred years. From what I have gathered and understood of our history, three ships arrived in Hoarafushi three hundred years ago. One of those ships remained in Hoarafushi, while another traveled to Dhuvaafaru. Mr. President, it is my understanding that you, as the representative for the Hoarafushi constituency, are a descendant of the families who arrived on that very ship. Therefore, I have been reflecting on the potential outcomes once this century-long period concludes.Mohamed Nasheed
Furthermore, Nasheed stated that all current residents of the Maldives are the proud descendants of a population formed by ancestors who migrated from various foreign lands to settle in these islands.
