He further cautioned that if such an agreement is signed without public consultation, a future MDP administration would terminate the contract without providing any compensation.

Former Economic Minister Fayyaz Ismail has stated that a future MDP administration will nullify any agreement to award the Ras Male' project to UAE’s Eagle Hills company if the decision is made without public consultation.
In an interview with "Adhadhu," Fayyaz harshly criticized the government over the decision to lease land for the Ras Male' project to Eagle Hills for 99 years, as well as the subsequent subdivision of the property into apartments for individual sale to thousands of foreign nationals.
Fayyaz warned that if this agreement proceeds, the prolonged presence of these individuals would gradually lead to the establishment of certain rights over the land. He noted that with a significant foreign population residing here, it would become very easy to exert pressure on a small nation like the Maldives by claiming they are entitled to such rights. Furthermore, Fayyaz stated that this situation would make it easier for external forces to demand and compel the Maldives to allow these individuals to practice their own religions within the country.
If things proceed as currently suggested, it will undoubtedly happen. That is my greatest concern and the reason for our opposition. My position is that I cannot accept the permanent leasing of this land to foreigners in this manner, whether or not they are granted Maldivian citizenship. However, I would accept it if citizenship were granted. If they are granted citizenship as Muslim Maldivian citizens, I have no objection.Fayyaz Ismail
Fayyaz stated, however, that granting land rights to non-Muslim foreigners could mirror the historical situation in Palestine. He noted that during the Ottoman Empire, Zionist organizations began purchasing land, a process that evolved over 200 years into the major crisis seen today, where they now claim established rights over those territories.
Fayyaz also stated that when undertaking such matters, it is essential to provide the public with full disclosure and clear explanations. Furthermore, he emphasized the importance of listening to the people's voices and determining their actual preferences on the issue.
Therefore, I am stating very clearly that I do not support any project being carried out without an acquisition cost. I do not agree with granting foreign entities permanent rights or ownership over our land. If this is to proceed, President Muizzu must consult the public. He must determine the will of the Maldivian people and open the floor for public debate. A platform must be provided for those with concerns to voice their apprehensions regarding this matter.Fayyaz Ismail
Fayyaz stated that no constitutional amendments should be made until all necessary procedures are completed. He emphasized that the process should not proceed in its current form. Furthermore, Fayyaz warned that if these changes are implemented without seeking public input, a future MDP government would nullify the agreement.
Fayyaz stated that Eagle Hills would be formally notified of the matter. He emphasized that the company would be informed that no compensation would be provided if they choose to engage in a project initiated by an unpopular government, especially while being fully aware of the public's decision.
