Former Vice President of the opposition MDP, Mohamed Shifaz, has called on the Maldivian people to prepare for a change in government, labeling the current administration as corrupt.
Speaking at the MDP’s "Haruge" rally on Wednesday night, Shifaz severely criticized President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s administration over its wasteful expenditure.
Shifaz stated that upon assuming power, the current administration spent $34 million on the procurement of drones using funds not allocated in the budget. He further noted that the Ras Male' reclamation project was also initiated without budgetary provisions, alleging that the contractors are being paid $800,000 per day. Highlighting that $1 billion has already been spent through these daily payments of $800,000, Shifaz questioned the availability of the country's dollar reserves.
We believe this is a display of deceit and treachery. It is nothing else. This is not being delivered for the benefit of the Maldivian people. It is a profound injustice and a betrayal against us. The citizens of the Maldives must remain ready to change this treacherous and hypocritical government.Mohamed Shifaz
Referring to the Ras Male' project, Shifaz stated that after initially promising to provide housing for Maldivians, the land has now been given away to a foreign party either for free or at a significantly undervalued rate. He described this as a grave injustice and a betrayal of the Maldivian people.
Furthermore, with the election to appoint councilors to the Local Government Authority (LGA) board scheduled for Saturday, October 31, 2026, Shifaz emphasized the necessity for MDP councilors, Women's Development Committee (WDC) presidents, and independent members from across all islands to unite and secure a victory. Shifaz further asserted that the results would demonstrate President Muizzu’s lack of support in any island across the country, adding that the following day would mark a further weakening of the administration and serve as a catalyst for the public to rise and change this "treacherous government."
