The ruling People's National Congress (PNC) has secured victory in the elections held to appoint representatives to the Local Government Authority (LGA) board. The election was conducted to select board members representing island councils and Women's Development Committees (WDCs).
This election was held to determine the members who will represent local councils and Women's Development Committees on the board of the Local Government Authority (LGA).
Based on the composition of the Local Government Authority (LGA) Board, members must be elected to represent specific constituencies. These include a representative from among the mayors of city councils, a representative from the presidents of island councils, and a representative from the presidents of Women's Development Committees.
Kulhudhuffushi City Mayor Mohamed Athif has been elected to the board unopposed, as he was the sole candidate to apply representing the city councils.
The election to fill the remaining two seats on the board was held on Saturday. According to the preliminary results, Ali Ahmed, the President of the F. Nilandhoo Island Council, was elected to represent island council presidents on the Local Government Authority (LGA) board. He contested the election as a candidate of the ruling People's National Congress (PNC).
Furthermore, the results indicate that Ali Zaafir, President of the N. Manadhoo Council, was elected to the LGA Board representing the Presidents of the Women's Development Committees. With this outcome, the ruling PNC has secured both seats contested in this election.
The Local Government Authority (LGA) is the primary regulatory body established under the Decentralization Act to coordinate and oversee the operations of local councils across the administrative divisions of the Maldives.
