Pres. Muizzu vs undeniable record on banning Israeli passports

31 އޮކްޓޯބަރު 2026 | ހޮނިހިރު 11:22

Many have criticized the assertion that the initiative to ban Israeli passports is a personal endeavor of President Muizzu, labeling it a factual misrepresentation. Given that this bill was originally submitted to the Parliament during the previous administration, parliamentary records indicate that the government-aligned majority only proceeded with the matter following significant public pressure

Recent declarations by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu where he boasted of championing the cause of Gaza’s innocent Muslims more vigorously than any prior head of state in the Maldives, supposedly voicing this stance from the inception of the administration’s transition period, face widespread condemnation as an outright distortion of reality and a brazen clash with recorded history.

Every former Maldivian commander-in-chief invariably defended Palestinian rights and sustained unwavering, overt positions opposing Israeli hostilities.

Meanwhile, the real timeline surrounding the prohibited entry of Israeli passport holders is not ancient history; it lingers vividly in the collective consciousness of the populace as though it unfolded just yesterday.

Traction behind barring Israeli passports mounted substantially during the closing chapter of former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s MDP regime. When it came to establishing an official statutory framework, it was South Galolhu MP Meekail Ahmed Naseem, hailing from the MDP, who originally tabled the revision to the Immigration Act within the People’s Majlis during May 2023. Not a single trace of this endeavor stemmed from the reigning administration or any affiliated PNC lawmaker.

Even though the legislature adopted the draft and sent it along to the 241 Committee for assessment, it sat completely neglected and frozen within that panel, all while the sitting administration enjoyed undisputed, absolute dominance and a parliamentary supermajority.

The regime has repeatedly showcased its muscle to rush pivotal draft legislation and sweeping constitutional revisions through the chamber in an astonishing four to eight hours flat. In stark contrast, permitting a legislative proposal so intimately bound to the deep convictions of the global Islamic community and Maldivian citizens to gather dust on a committee desk for upwards of 12 months functions as unmistakable confirmation of an absence of authentic dedication.

Moreover, the official legislative ledger proves that lawmakers belonging to the PNC majority persistently rejected and struck down emergency proposals and formal motions aimed at fast-tracking the stagnant draft.

Executive action only materialized after the public applied immense heat, mounting recurrent street demonstrations directly in front of the People's Majlis and loudly condemning the regime’s deadlocked handling of the situation.

Considering that lawmakers pushed the proposal forward only after sitting on it inside committee chambers for more than 300 days, prompted entirely by organized civil demonstrations forcing the executive's hand, President Muizzu’s self-congratulatory assertion that he stood as the original pioneer behind the passport prohibition represents an embarrassing manipulation of objective truth.

Commentators on local politics view the head of state’s assertions, implying that rival figures merely chased opportunism whereas he exclusively possessed the bravery to follow through, while simultaneously fabricating tales of incoming diplomatic calls from abroad pleading with him to back off, as a calculated myth fabricated solely to project an aura of individual gallantry disconnected from genuine events.

Revered chroniclers of the past such as Husain Salahuddin, Mohamed Ameen, and Ahmed Shafeeq may have passed on, yet trying to reconstruct a false historical record while current happenings play out directly in plain view of the citizenry crosses an unforgivable line.

Precisely who does President Muizzu believe he is deceiving, and what motive drives him to twist the verifiable record of an episode that took place under eighteen months prior and aired nationwide on live broadcasts?

Fabricating observable, verifiable truths for cheap personal political mileage is a direct, insolent attack on the intellect and vigilance of the Maldivian electorate.
