Former Vice President Dr. Mohamed Jameel Ahmed has questioned the silence of Islamic Minister Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed and the nation’s religious scholars, as President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu allegedly works to undermine the Maldivian Muslim Ummah.
Speaking on a RaajjeTV talk show, Jameel noted that the Maldives has faced various challenges throughout its history. He emphasized that the nation has reached its current state and remains independent today only because individuals stood up to uphold and defend the country.
Jameel stated that the incumbent president, Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, is facilitating the settlement of non-Muslims in the country, though he expressed his belief that such efforts would not succeed. Furthermore, Jameel asserted that he would not allow these attempts to come to fruition.
Jameel stated that this is a responsibility currently resting on the shoulders of every Maldivian, and one for which they will be held accountable.
Some perceive freedom as merely the absence of physical restraint—believing they are free as long as they are not bound by a rope around their neck with their hands tied behind their backs. However, the true loss of freedom lies in the inability to speak one's mind, even when there is a burning desire to do so. I often wonder about the role of our religious scholars in this regard. In reality, the greatest responsibility rests upon the shoulders of these scholars. It is they who teach that Islam is the most complete religion and that no other faith is accepted by Allah—principles clearly established in the Holy Quran. Therefore, the responsibility to do everything necessary to defend and promote the faith lies squarely with them.Dr. Mohamed Jameel
Dr. Jameel repeatedly questioned the whereabouts of religious scholars at a time when efforts are being made to undermine the nation's status as a hundred percent Muslim country. He emphasized that religious scholars are those who travel to places with minority Muslim populations or non-Muslim communities to invite them to Islam, and asserted that it is their fundamental responsibility to preserve the Maldives' identity as an entirely Muslim nation.
Jameel stated that no leader could commit a more profound error than the one President Muizzu is making today. Questioning whether a leader could commit a more egregious act, Jameel asserted that while a leader works to undermine the entire Maldivian Muslim Ummah, it is the duty of religious scholars to step in and stop it.
