While residents of Bandeyri Koshi—a housing complex in Male' designated for military families—have been ordered to vacate by the end of December, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced plans for a major redevelopment of the site. Speaking at a ceremony held on May 9, 2026, to mark the 134th anniversary of the Maldives National Defence Force, the President stated that the existing structures will be demolished to make way for a large-scale housing project for military and police personnel, scheduled to commence in 2027.
President Muizzu stated that this project is not exclusive to the military, but will also guarantee housing for police officers.
President Muizzu stated that although Bandeyri Koshi was designated to provide housing for military personnel, the facility's condition has significantly deteriorated. He noted that only a few families are currently able to reside there, highlighting that the aging complex has remained without redevelopment for many years.
