Just who is Abdulla and why did Alabbar reportedly hand him millions?

The massive Ras Malé venture was entrusted in major part to Eagle Hills, chaired by Mohamed Alabbar. However, when the Emirati real estate tycoon arrived in the Maldives in October and sat across from local entrepreneurs and top-level administration figures, an astonishing defense surfaced.

Local business leaders directly confronted Alabbar over what tangible advantages the country is supposed to reap from this undertaking. With the archipelago currently strangled by a critical foreign currency crunch, the private sector made it painfully clear that a project draining resources without showing any discernible national upside makes little sense.

Alabbar’s response to these pressing concerns, however, was as bizarre as it was evasive: he insisted that he had already dished out millions of dollars to an individual known simply as "Abdulla", and that this payout had occurred repeatedly.

An enigmatic name dropped in front of mute officials

The Emirati executive never bothered to clarify which "Abdulla" supposedly pocketed these vast sums, but he doubled down on the assertion that millions upon millions had changed hands on several occasions.

The setting made the whole spectacle even more dubious. Seated in the exact same room were prominent authorities, including Attorney General Ahmed Usham and Minister of Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development Dr. Abdulla Muththalib, flanked by other top-ranking state functionaries.

However, as Alabbar brazenly pointed to his recurring payments to this mysterious recipient, Attorney General Usham chose total silence over demanding an explanation.

Dodging the USD shortage

Local business figures pushed the point further, attempting to extract something practical for the strained economy. They urged Alabbar to deposit five hundred million dollars, or settle for at least two hundred and fifty million, into the Bank of Maldives (BML) to help cushion the national USD crisis.

Rather than dealing with the proposal, the Eagle Hills chairman deflected entirely, falling back on his tired refrain that money had already been handed over to "Abdulla".

A taxpayer-funded lease and demands for answers

The fact that these claims played out in plain view of senior government officials has ignited intense public demand for the administration to unmask this shadowy "Abdulla" and lay out every detail of what actually transpired.

The public is also pushing for a thorough, sweeping inquiry to establish the reality behind these alleged transactions.

Scrutiny is mounting just as fiercely around the overarching pact signed with Eagle Hills itself. Maldivians footed the bill to dredge and reclaim prime land at Ras Malé, only for a massive section of that taxpayer-funded expanse to be handed over on a ninety-nine-year lease with zero prompt return for the public.

With physical construction looming, economic and financial specialists are demanding an impartial audit conducted to global auditing benchmarks before any ground is broken.

In the view of these experts, subjecting such a gargantuan scheme to independent scrutiny is the only legitimate way to establish its economic viability, guarantee its legality, and protect both state finances and citizen rights from being disregarded.
