Former Home Minister Sheikh Imran Abdulla has questioned the logic of speaking about national independence and sovereignty after granting 500 hectares of Maldivian land to Zionist Jews to use at their discretion, free of charge.
In a post on X on Saturday, Imran stated that 500 hectares of land from the beloved soil of the Maldives—preserved through the sacrifices and blood of Maldivian ancestors—has been gifted to Zionist Jews to do with as they please.
In this regard, Imran questioned the logic of speaking about the nation's independence and sovereignty, or the dignity and unity of Islam, after handing over this land to the Zionists.
Furthermore, Imran stated that if the current plans for Ras Male' proceed as intended, the power to determine the nation's destiny will be lost from the hands of Maldivians by the time it reaches future generations.
Furthermore, Imran appealed to the current generation to ensure they do not become the reason for the Maldives to fall into foreign subjugation.
Imran’s remarks come at a time when President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has asserted that protecting the independence and sovereignty of the Maldives is his administration's top priority. The President has previously vowed that not even a grain of Maldivian sand would be ceded to foreign parties. However, the government has faced widespread public criticism following the decision to grant 500 hectares of land to a foreign company for the development of Ras Male'.
The government is promoting the "Ras Male' Waterfront and Marina" project as the largest investment in the history of the Maldivian economy. However, the project has drawn widespread concern from political figures, scholars, and the general public, fueled by the government's refusal to disclose any details regarding the signed agreement. Further intensifying the controversy is the background of Mohamed Alabbar, head of Eagle Hills—the company awarded the project—who is noted for his close ties to Israel. Many critics have expressed fears that this venture could lead to the Maldives falling under Israeli influence.
