Speaking at the Male' City Council's official meeting on Wednesday, Mayor Adam Azim stated that the government is progressively cutting the council's allocated budget. He characterized these financial constraints as a deliberate act of obstruction aimed directly at the citizens.
Azim expressed profound concern over the challenges being imposed by the government, noting that the Male' City Council is an institution tasked with providing essential services to the public. He further stated that the council remains committed to carrying out its work without interruption, to the full extent allowed by its available budget.
The Mayor stated that the council is currently facing significant challenges in recruitment, which has consequently hindered the progress of various administrative and developmental projects.
Mayor Azim stated that the government is seizing income-generating lands from the City Council with the deliberate intention of undermining the council's authority. He emphasized that the council must seek compensation for these losses and urged the public to speak out against such actions.
Furthermore, Mayor Azim stated that this administration is a "circus government," adding that the public is now witnessing this reality firsthand.
The Male' City Council has decided to file a case with the Supreme Court regarding the government's decision to reclaim 14 plots of land currently under the council's jurisdiction.
In a resolution passed regarding the matter, the Council noted that the Ministry’s directive to reclaim the land was issued in reference to a letter from the President’s Office. The resolution further stated that although the Council was given the opportunity to submit grievances concerning the decision, the Ministry failed to share any details of the proposed projects, as mandated by the Decentralization Act.
