Former Vice President Faisal Naseem has stated that the most significant contribution the MDP has made for the people was the reform of the Constitution, adding that he has remained steadfast with the party during its most critical times.
Speaking on Thursday's "Fashaairu" program, Faisal stated that the process of drafting the Constitution between 2004 and 2008 was a monumental undertaking. He noted that although the MDP was represented by only 23 members in the Special Majlis at the time, those members worked tirelessly in the interest of the entire nation.
Faisal stated that the reform efforts undertaken alongside the Maldivian people have successfully increased public participation, established the separation of powers, and guaranteed voting rights for youth aged 18 and above. He noted that he had served as a member of the MDP from the very beginning of that movement until its conclusion, adding that all administrations in the Maldives to date have been built upon the foundation of that Constitution.
Furthermore, he stated his belief that the Constitution once again requires positive legislative reforms today.
Faisal stated that although he was not officially registered as a party member during his five-year term as Vice President, he worked tirelessly to support the government's agenda and secure victories for the MDP in the 2019 parliamentary elections and the local council elections. He further revealed that he officially joined the MDP in 2024, a time when the party was facing political vulnerability following its defeat in the 2023 presidential election.
Faisal stated that following his return to the party, he worked closely to secure victories for the MDP in the Male' City mayoral by-election, the 2024 parliamentary elections, and the local council elections.
Faisal stated that while many flock to a party during its time in power, today is the moment when the MDP most urgently requires courage and the support of its members. He further emphasized that he has always been a proponent of reform and justice, standing firmly against corruption and deceit—values which he noted are the core principles of the MDP.
