Former Economic Minister and former Chairperson of the MDP, Fayyaz Ismail, has stated that if he wins the 2028 presidential election, he will implement "major changes" before the subsequent parliamentary elections.
Speaking on Sunday's 'Fashaairu' program, Fayyaz stated that the People's Majlis can only be transformed into a prestigious, robust institution that advocates for the rights of the people by implementing significant structural changes. He further noted that a substantial portion of the proposed reforms is specifically aimed at legislative overhaul.
Fayyaz further emphasized that in light of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s remarks regarding constitutional amendments, it is crucial to facilitate a public referendum to allow citizens to decide on these matters. However, he expressed skepticism, stating he does not believe the current administration will grant such an opportunity.
Fayyaz stated that the MDP's strategy is to secure victory in the 2028 election and immediately proceed to a referendum. He further noted that parliamentary approval would not be required to initiate a referendum, and emphasized that if the proposed changes are approved by a public vote, the Parliament would be compelled to implement them.
Furthermore, Fayyaz stated that as this has become an official party policy, any candidate who secures the 2028 presidential ticket will advocate for these changes during their campaign.
Our vision, God willing, is to secure victory in 2028 and immediately proceed to a referendum. Since this has now become official party policy, any candidate who receives our presidential ticket must commit to working toward this objective. Consequently, throughout the 2028 campaign, every representative will be advocating for these specific reforms. This ensures that the message is already reaching the public. Should we succeed, we will move directly to a referendum to let the people decide.Fayyaz Ismail
Fayyaz noted that approximately six months remain in the current Parliament's term following the transition of power, raising questions about whether the body would extend its cooperation. However, he expressed his belief that once the administration changes, lawmakers will be liberated from the influence and constraints of President Muizzu, significantly increasing the likelihood of implementing those changes.
Fayyaz stated that the discussions center on positive reforms, acknowledging that there may be disagreements on certain issues. He noted that while perspectives and opinions may vary among individuals, such differences should not be viewed as a problem with any party involved.
