Member of Parliament for North Galolhu, Meekail Ahmed Naseem, has submitted an emergency motion calling for the disclosure of details regarding the Ras Male' project agreement. The motion alleges significant embezzlement and corruption in the decision to grant 500 hectares of reclaimed land to Abu Dhabi’s Eagle Hills company on a 99-year lease.
This emergency motion was submitted to the Parliament calling on the government to disclose the details of the agreement signed with Eagle Hills company regarding the Ras Male' project.
Presenting the motion, MP Meekail stated that there are numerous concerns regarding the Ras Male' project. He highlighted that the government's failure to disclose any details of the project agreement to date remains one of the primary concerns.
Furthermore, the member alleged that the agreement was structured in a way that prevents the state from recovering the substantial public funds spent on land reclamation. He further stated that an area exceeding 500 hectares reclaimed from Ras Male' has been leased to Eagle Hills company for a period of 99 years.
Meekail highlighted that under the terms of this agreement, the land was allocated without any acquisition costs or lease payments. Furthermore, he characterized the provision granting Eagle Hills full rights to lease the developed properties as a significant financial loss to the state.
MP Meekail further stated that keeping the agreement of such a major state project confidential could lead to irreparable damage to state assets and finances, while significantly increasing the risk of corruption. The emergency motion emphasized that disclosing the full details of this agreement to the relevant authorities and the public is an absolute necessity.
The emergency motion was accepted and debated during Monday's parliamentary sitting.
The government is facing heavy criticism following the decision to lease land from the Ras Male' reclamation project to a UAE-based company for 99 years. This move comes despite previous assurances from President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, who had pledged that not even a grain of sand from the reclaimed land would be handed over to any foreign party.
President Muizzu has previously maintained on several occasions that Ras Male' will remain an asset of the Maldivian people, asserting that land in the area will not be leased to foreign parties on a long-term basis.
