Mayor Azim: Male' Builds Robust Drainage System with Five Percent State Budget Allocation

Male' City Mayor Adam Azim stated that the City Council has resolved the flooding issues that plagued the capital for the past 30 years by utilizing the five percent allocated from the state budget. He further noted that MDP-led councils continue to set a standard for the effective management and utilization of budgetary resources.

Speaking at the closing ceremony of the Maldivian Democratic Party’s (MDP) 5th Congress, Azim assured that the party remains committed to its work and will continue to deliver results, regardless of any challenges or obstructions posed by the current administration.

Azim stated that while local councils receive only five percent of the state budget, they are currently managing all their responsibilities within this allocation. He further noted that this five percent represents the most transparent and effectively utilized portion of the entire state budget.

After 30 years of persistent flooding in Male', we have finally addressed this issue using only the 5 percent allocated to the Male' City Council. During these floods, water would surge into more than 300 homes, damaging rooms and forcing residents to replace their belongings once or twice every year. This had been the reality for three decades, yet we managed to change it with that 5 percent. We do not know what happened to the 5 percent allocated to the previous Mayor; all they managed to show for it was the planting of 80 date palms. This is the difference. This is the clear distinction between when MDP is in power and when others are in leadership.

Azim stated that this is the result of knowing how to effectively manage affairs within a decentralized system.

Mayor Azim stated that, in addition to addressing Male' City's flooding issues, the council has renovated 182 roads over the past two years. The Mayor further noted that the tiling in all mosque restrooms across the city has been replaced, and new carpeting has been installed in every mosque in Male'.

Azim stated that all mosques in Male' have been renovated, noting that this achievement is a direct result of the MDP being in power. The Mayor further remarked that under an MDP administration and council, they have consistently demonstrated fiscal responsibility, a standard he believes the public recognizes and appreciates today.
