Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has stated that the government received $43 million under the agreement for the development of V. Fohtheyo Falhu.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the MDP Congress on Thursday night, former President Solih responded to allegations made by a minister of President Muizzu’s administration. Refuting claims that the V. Fohtheyo lagoon was handed over free of charge, President Solih clarified that the government had received $43 million under the terms of that agreement.
Furthermore, President Solih stated that under the agreement, the developer has been tasked with reclaiming land and constructing a domestic airport in the lagoon using their own funds.
One objective is to establish the airport as a key link in our integrated national transport network. With the development of this facility in Vaavu Atoll, the initiative to ensure every atoll in the Maldives has its own airport will be complete. The airport will be designed to accommodate domestic flight operations.President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih
President Solih stated that while it is easy to make numerous pledges, the true measure of development should be the tangible benefits a project brings to the citizens and its overall impact on the nation.
At the same time, President Solih stated that major national issues cannot be resolved through political slogans alone. He emphasized that addressing these challenges requires responsible leadership, credible economic policies, and leaders committed to cooperating in the national interest.
Furthermore, President Solih stated that the primary step required to overcome the country's current situation is to change the administration and re-establish an MDP government in the Maldives.
