Maldives calls for strengthening bilateral relations to ensure a resilient future

Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef has affirmed the Maldives' commitment to achieving the objectives of the Global Development Initiative (GDI). He emphasized the importance of strengthening international cooperation to ensure a resilient, inclusive, and sustainable future for developing nations.

The Vice President made these remarks while addressing the High-Level Meeting on the Global Development Initiative, hosted by China on the sidelines of the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

In his remarks, the Vice President expressed his gratitude to China for its ongoing projects aimed at expanding the Global Development Initiative (GDI). He also highlighted the vital importance of such initiatives in mitigating the adverse impacts of challenges faced by developing nations.

Furthermore, the Vice President highlighted the enduring relationship between the Maldives and China, acknowledging China's significant role in the nation's development.

The Vice President highlighted that debt traps pose significant challenges to ensuring national resilience. He further noted that climate change presents additional hurdles for Small Island Developing States (SIDS), emphasizing the critical importance of achieving the objectives set for COP31.

Highlighting the vital role of innovation—including science, technology, and artificial intelligence—in achieving sustainable development, the Vice President expressed his support for knowledge and technology transfer, as well as capacity-building initiatives.
