Residents of B. Hithaadhoo have begun expressing concern over President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's failure to fulfill his pledge to hand over the island of Maamaduvvari to the community.
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu pledged in 2024 to officially include Maamaduvvari under the jurisdiction of Hithaadhoo and hand the island over to its residents.
Speaking to "RaajjeTV" regarding the matter, a former member of the Hithadhoo Council stated that although residents held high hopes of acquiring Maamadduvari in line with the President's pledge, no practical progress has been made to date. He further noted that the government's delay is posing significant obstacles to the island's development.
Hithaadhoo is home to a dedicated farming community. However, severe land scarcity on the island has hindered the expansion of agriculture and other economic activities.
Consequently, the residents view the inclusion of Maamaduvvari within the island's jurisdiction as a vital development, directly linked to their future prosperity and livelihoods.
Providing the latest updates on the matter, a former member of the island council stated that according to information received through the Ministry of Tourism, Maamadduvari is scheduled to be handed over to Hithaadhoo this November. However, as various deadlines have previously passed without the pledge being fulfilled, residents remain skeptical about whether the commitment will be honored this time.
President Muizzu has repeatedly pledged to resolve land scarcity issues across the islands, both during his campaign travels and after assuming office. However, residents of Hithadhoo contend that the government is offering nothing but empty promises regarding the Maamadduvari issue, asserting that they now want to see tangible progress on the ground.
