Fayyaz: Muizzu’s Policies Are Dismantling Tourism and Pushing Maldives Toward Bankruptcy

Former Economic Minister Fayyaz Ismail has warned that the government's current tourism policies are steering the Maldives toward a perilous situation that could potentially break the backbone of the nation's economy.

Fayyaz stated that the decisions being made by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s administration can no longer be viewed simply as a result of incompetence. Instead, he characterized them as systematic attacks aimed at dismantling the Maldivian economy.

Fayyaz highlighted that the government's newly introduced foreign exchange regulations and the decision to tax international tour operators contravene international trade practices. He further characterized these changes as legally questionable measures that conflict with international treaties.

Fayyaz further noted that instead of increasing state revenue, such policies have begun to project an image of the Maldives to the international community as a risky investment destination where conducting business is increasingly difficult.

Fayyaz highlighted that as global tourism competitors launch aggressive marketing campaigns, there is a significant risk that tour operators may stop promoting the Maldives due to the government’s abrupt policy shifts. He further warned that if the business environment becomes unprofitable, international travel agents will begin diverting tourists to alternative destinations instead of the Maldives.

Fayyaz stated that while the President’s single directive has already begun to destabilize the Maldives' tourism industry, the adverse effects will extend far beyond just the resorts. He warned that this economic shock threatens the livelihoods of thousands of Maldivian employees and risks the bankruptcy of local businesses. He further emphasized that dismantling tourism—the nation's "goose that lays the golden egg"—would ultimately pave the way for national insolvency.

Consequently, he urged the government to cease making hasty decisions in policy formulation without considering their long-term consequences. Fayyaz also called on the administration to reform its policies and find solutions to the serious concerns currently facing the nation.

Highlighting that these issues underscore the urgent need for a significant overhaul of the Maldives' governance structure, Fayyaz stated that granting a single individual the power to ruin the entire nation poses a grave threat to the country's future. He emphasized that the current system must be completely reviewed.
