ACC Decides to Seek Corruption Charges Against Former MPL CEO Junaid and Former Employee

The Anti-Corruption Commission has decided to seek charges against the former CEO and a former employee of Maldives Ports Limited (MPL), forwarding the case to the Prosecutor General’s Office for prosecution.

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) announced on Sunday its decision to seek criminal charges against officials involved in the procurement of 18 air conditioning units by Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) between 2016 and 2017. The case, which is set to be forwarded to the Prosecutor General’s Office on September 16, 2024, involves allegations that the units were purchased at prices significantly above market rates without a public tender or authorization from the company's Board of Directors.

According to a statement released by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), the air conditioning units were procured for MVR 1,083,998.00 from a sole proprietorship that lacked prior experience in the field and maintained personal ties with the individuals accused in the case.

The ACC stated that these items were procured in violation of the company’s established strategies and regulations governing the acquisition of goods and services by state-owned enterprises.

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has announced its decision to seek criminal charges against Mohamed Junaid (M. Reefvilla, Male'), the former CEO of Maldives Ports Limited (MPL), and Abdul Wahhab (M. Hill-in-the-Garden, Male'), who served as the company’s Head of Procurement at the time.

Authorities have decided to seek charges in this case, including the offense of abusing official capacity or influence to obtain an undue advantage. Additionally, charges will be filed for acting in a manner detrimental to the state in a matter providing a benefit to the government, as stipulated under the Prevention and Prohibition of Corruption Act.
